The answer is very simple – You want more traffic to your blog. And if you are monetizing your blog, more traffic = more money.

If you want to be ranked on the first page of Google and drive free organic traffic to your blog, then you need to do a keyword research so that you know which keyword is popular and which keyword is not.

In the case of lelaki kacak, I am not doing a keyword research to see how popular the keyword is. I am just checking to see whether it will be easy or not to rank the post on the first page of Google SERPs, and also the competition I am facing to get to page 1.

For this keyword research example, I am using Traffic Travis (Affiliate Link). You can download the free version with limited functions at Traffic Travis site, or you can try out the Professional version for 7 days for only $1 here.

At the picture above, please see the box I marked in red, when I ran Traffic Travis’s SEO Analysis for the word lelaki kacak, it says that the ‘Difficulty Rating’ for that keyword is easy. Which means that you could easily rank your page in Google’s first page. It also listed out 20 sites from google.com.my that are currently on the first of Google and some information about the sites. The indicators on the report like the number of backlinks to the page, the number of backlinks to the domain, domain age etc could help you to decide on how to proceed with your SEO campaign.

You may be using a different kind of tools, but the basics report should almost be the same.

With a consistent SEO campaign, it will be easy to be at page one, but if all the people that are taking part in the SEO challenge are optimizing for that keyword, it may not be that easy. Easy, but not easy … hah!

Plus the frequent change in Google’s algorithm and the existing complexity, nobody knows exactly how Google indexes all the sites. SEO experts can only guest. Which is what I am doing right now, but based on the reports from Traffic Travis makes my guessing easier.

The lelaki kacak post which was published on 21st March 2012 got indexed on the same day. It was on page 6 of Google SERPs on the next day and on page 3 today.

So far, I have not done any backlinkings yet. Only a few blog commenting here and there on related blogs – those who are entering the same contest. Still could not find time to optimize it, but after seeing the increase in the value of cash being offered, outsourcing looks like a good option.

Earlier, I also asked whether should we have the meaning for the word Bing in the dictionary, like the one we already have for Google. After going through some statistics from comScore, looks like Bing is not even able to beat Yahoo! in the search engine wars.

Asia Pacific
According to a study by comScore in September 2009, 38.6 billion searches were conducted in the Asia Pacific region. An increase of 33% from the previous year. Google ranked as the top search destination with 44% shares, while Baidu has 21.3% market share, followed by Yahoo! 13.8%. Bing was not mentioned, but Microsoft sites share is less than 10%.

Google’s 44% equals to 17 billion searches and that is a lot of searches in a month. Google captured the majority share of searches in Malaysia with 71.1%. I don’t have the exact search phrases that were used, but the data is enough to show that more people are using search engines to get information. They are using Bing the least.

United States
November 2009′s data on US search engine rankings showed almost the same result.

Google Sites led the U.S. core search market in November with 65.6 percent of the searches conducted, followed by Yahoo! Sites (17.5 percent), and Microsoft Sites (10.3 percent). Ask Network captured 3.8 percent of the search market, followed by AOL LLC with 2.8 percent.

Microsoft sites (Bing included), although at third place, only able to get 10% of the total searches, regardless whether it is in the US or in Asia Pacific.

If you are doing search engine optimization, you can drop Bing from your list of search engines to optimize, but if you are targeting China, you must consider Baidu. Google is still number two in China, and it will be that way for a while. Based on the experience working in a Chinese company, Chinese will always prefer Chinese products to others, unless Google could come out with something to temp them to change. Maybe with Android?
